Hotel Review: Kyukamura Hotel, Rabbit Island (Okunojima), Japan

This is the only hotel on the island and it doesn’t seem to have been renovated since it first opened in 1982. It is a Japanese- style resort hotel with only 2 Western rooms – the rest are tatami rooms with futons.

Our room is spacious, on the 3 of 4 floors, and like all the rooms faces the sea. Upon entering there is an odd smell of tatami and toilet mixed together, not very pleasant but probably due to the age of the hotel. the futons are made up for you after 6pm each evening.

Breakfast and dinner are served as part of our package and both are buffets with more choices than needed. The quality is probably a 7/10 which is not too bad.

Bikes are available for rental and we choose an electric bike each for JPY 700 for 2 hours which is enough time to circle the island about 3 times with some photos stops on the way.

The main (or in fact only) reason for visiting this island is to see the rabbits that were introduced into the island in the 1970s. Previous to that, it was a testing group for poison gas by the Japanese during WWII.

Unfortunately it rained throughout our 2 night stay so most of our time was spent either in our room or in the public baths at either end of the hotel.

Not sure if I will visit again. But at least I can now strike it off my bucket list 🐇
